Marcelino: "The anxiety to find an equaliser led to us hurrying"

Valencia CF coach Marcelino accepted that, on balance, Celta deserved the win at Balaídos on Matchday 2 of the LaLiga season, but saw some positive signs from his team in terms of their creating chances.

The result
"We came here with the intention of winning. We knew that Celta are a very good team in attack, where they have very high quality players. Everything was very evenly matched -and perhaps even reached a standstill. However, a quick move that Celta did well enabled them to score. I think that we reacted well. From the goal up until the end of the first half, I think that we were the better side and we had chances to have equalised, but we weren't capable of finishing them. I think some of those chances were very clear."

The second half
"We were more inconsistent in the second half. I think that the anxiety that we had to score meant that we hurried, and played with a lot of players forward. We could have equalised, but our opponents could also have scored a second goal from one of their counterattacks. Overall, I consider that we could have equalised but that the victory for Celta is not an unfair result. In general terms, we could say that they were better than us tonight."

Defensive solidity
"I don't really think that we made many mistakes for the majority of the game, and we had the clearer chances of the two sides. The only clear chance that Celta had, they converted. If we gave them more opportunities in the second half, it was because we wanted to find an equaliser and they have good attacking players.

"Instead of focusing on our play, we did everything in a hurry. Despite that, we had clear chances. The team at times played with too much space between us. It was back-and-forth action, and that favours the team who are winning. We didn't have our best game today; we need to raise our game."
